  • How Instagram Helps Build Fitness Communities

    by Cal Fit | May 15, 2013
Are you using Instagram? If you aren’t among the 100 million users finding value in this fun photo sharing app, you might want to check it out. Instagram allows you to take pictures from your tablet or smartphone, categorize them by subject, apply fun digital filters, and ultimately share them across various social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Aside from being a great tool to help keep you in the loop with what your friends and family are up to, Instagram represents a great opportunity for anyone interested in health and fitness to become a part of a larger fitness community actively sharing their digital awesomeness every day.

    #Fitness #Categories

You can easily find health and fitness photos among the 4 billion pictures that have been posted to Instagram since it’s inception in 2010. But don’t worry, you don’t have to sort through all 4 billion one by one.

Instagram supports hashtags (the # symbol), which can be placed before a word in the picture caption to categorize the content of the picture. For example, if you did a search for “#weightloss” on instagram, your search would return nearly 600,000 photos from people who have hashtagged their photos in that category.

    Find Your Peeps

There are probably people around you every day who are interested in the same things you are, you just may not know it! If you did a search for #calfit you’d turn up over 2,000 pictures of fellow California Family Fitness members who are sharing their love of health and fitness all over Instagram.

You can connect with these people, and foster a virtual community supporting your shared passions and supplement the interactions you may already be experiencing at the gym.

    Find People With Similar Interests

Once you find the categories that relate to the information you want, whether it be #weightloss or #biggains, you can keep track of the people posting the photos you love most by following their Instagram profile.

Every time they post a pic, it’ll show up in your feed, and pretty soon you’ll find yourself rooting for these people, and following their journey as if you know them in person.

    Inspire Others

Why keep your success to yourself? If you’ve worked hard to chisel a rock hard six-pack, or lost a ton of weight after having a baby, you should be really proud of yourself, and there’s nothing wrong with sharing that success with others. You never know who may be struggling with similar demons, and you sharing your pictures and journey may be just the extra motivation they need to keep on pushing to reach their own goals.

    Find Inspiration

It works both ways. If you’re a little shy, or just starting your own journey, you don’t have to put yourself out there. You can just sit back and be inspired by others. Search the hashtags, find the photos that motivate you, and follow the people who are currently doing the things you want to do. Let yourself be awed by the experiences of others, and use that as fuel for your own fire.

Instagram helps people find their friends and keep track of their lives in these busy times. But it also helps us find new friends, and nurtures our commitment to live a healthy life by showing us that we aren’t alone. So snap some pics, find your peeps, and share your passion for fitness with the world!

  • Coming Soon to Group Fitness Schedules: Tabata Bootcamp

    by Cal Fit | May 08, 2013
A true Tabata Bootcamp™ workout is founded on quality, not quantity. In other words, the effect of a workout should not be based on the amount of time devoted to exercising, but rather what the exercise does for your body after the workout is over. Done the Tabata Bootcamp way, you not only burn calories during the exercise, but your body keeps burning extra calories for the next 24 to 48 hours. Tabata Bootcamp training is a unique and revolutionary approach to successfully lose weight and build muscle in minimal time.

The unique protocol used in Tabata Bootcamp is the 20-10 microburst intervals. An interval consists of performing specifically chosen exercises at an ultra high intensity for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest. The beauty behind these short microbursts is that 20 seconds at high intensity is doable and the 10 second rest allows for brief recovery before moving on to the next exercise interval. These 20-10 microburst intervals are stacked in the 30 minute bootcamp workouts in specific sequences of different exercise movements that target every part of your body. The 6 minute workouts also stack 20-10 intervals using just a few select exercise movements that deliver a short yet high metabolic boosting workout.

This short duration, but high intensity interval training (HIIT) creates a prolonged afterburn, or EPOC (excess post oxygen consumpion). This type of training causes the body to take longer to return to its state of rest, so it continues to burn calories (5x more) at a higher rate long after the workout session has completed. Put simply, a 4-minute Tabata Bootcamp workout can reap the same benefits as a longer but steady workout, like running for a half hour. The results with microburst workouts are backed by research.

The Tabata Bootcamp workouts have been tested in clinical studies through a joint effort by two medical universities. The short duration workouts were shown to burn an average of 5x more calories AFTER their exercise is over. Additionally, short burst workouts and combination with 30 and 60 minute workouts were put through a single blinded randomized study demonstrating their effectiveness in providing weight loss and fitness.
  • Cal Fit Success Story: Natomas member, Alyssa M.

    by Cal Fit | May 07, 2013

Before I started my program with California Family Fitness, I felt (physically):  I have never been a "small girl" my whole life. My weight has been a constant battle. Before I moved to Sacramento three years ago, I was that person who bought a gym membership and went a total of two times before I completely forgot about it. My fiancé is a body builder so when we moved to Sac the first thing on his list was find a gym. I decided to start going with him after we joined Cal Fit and really enjoyed our time together after work at the gym. Unfortunately for me just going to the gym and lifting weights was not enough to keep me from gaining weight from all the carbs and mass portions I was enjoying with my bodybuilder boyfriend. I didn't even notice I was gaining weight until I woke up one day and all my clothes were too small. Every picture I had of myself, the camera was "making me look huge" and I was so tired all the time.

I went to the doctor to get tested for anything and everything that could cause my weight gain because surely it wasn't my fault! The results came back that I was completely healthy and there was no medical reason for the weight gain.  When I got on the scale at the doctor’s office that was my breaking point. I weighed 211 pounds. I was in disbelief and truly didn't know where to go from there.

The reason why I started my program with California Family Fitness was:

At first I was so disheartened at even starting to lose weight because I had so far to go. I felt there was no light at the end of the tunnel for me. I knew that I didn't want to stay at this weight and so I decided something had to change. I started on my own enlisting advice from some of the trainers and staff I knew at the gym. I started eating clean and started incorporating cardio into all my workouts. To my surprise the weight started falling off. I lost 20 pounds the first month and ten pounds each month for three months after that. The gym became an addiction and a hobby for me. As my weight got lower it got harder and harder to lose. Finally I had to really ask for help so I hired Trevor, a personal trainer at Cal Fit. The sessions Trevor put together for me were so amazing and his knowledge on what to eat and when, helped me so much. The sessions were always fun and it helped me build my coordination and endurance. After just 13 sessions I had dropped 11 pounds!!

    Now, I feel:

I feel amazing I have lost a total of 70 pounds and completely changed my life. My life no longer revolves around food and I absolutely love going to the gym. I love all my pictures and I finally feel confident when I walk into a room. I used to be so self conscious. I honestly feel like taking this step was the best thing I have ever done. I'm getting married in four months and dress shopping was actually fun!

Because of the results, I am now confident and so happy! I know that I am in the best shape of my life and never have to miss out of things because of my weight. I can share clothes with my friends and stop always comparing myself to others. I know that I'm the best me I can be and I have come so far from where I started!

I really can't say enough good things about Trevor and the rest of the Cal Fit staff including Ereece for referring me to Trevor and always making it fun! It was worth every single penny I paid to have my life, confidence and health back. Thank you Cal Fit!!
  • 10 Ways Exercise Makes You a Better Mom

    by Cal Fit | May 07, 2013
Dishes, laundry, spills, and bills. As a busy mom, itʼll always be easy to make the argument that you donʼt have time for the gym. And no one would argue with you! Moms have one of the hardest, most thankless jobs around, but one that comes with great reward when our little ones are happy and content. It shouldnʼt be a surprise that there is a direct correlation between happy kids, and moms who make exercise a priority in
their lives. Here are 10 benefits of exercise that might just persuade you to take another look at finding some time to sweat.

    1. More energy: This makes #1 because itʼs something all mommies need. Whether your brood consists of one or many, it can be exhausting keeping up with the varying needs of your loved ones. It takes as little as 15 minutes a day of moderate exercise, a few days a week, to increase energy and boost stamina.

    2. Monkey see monkey do: Regular exercise promotes self-esteem, positive body image, discipline, and patience. Whether they like it or not, our children are learning by mimicking our behaviors, and the more they see mom taking care of herself, the better the chance theyʼll make the same choices. Kids can fight it all they want (and they will), but one day theyʼll wake up and have turned into their parents! Best to take as much trauma as possible out of that equation, and project a future “them” they can be proud of. Start while they are young, be loud and proud about how important fitness is to you, and theyʼll never even question that exercise should be an integral part of their lives.

    3. Better sleep quality: Itʼs fairly common knowledge that a good, solid workout will help you sleep better at night. Thatʼs great, but what does it mean for your parenting skills? Higher quality shut-eye leads to quick thinking, faster reflexes, and improved memory. A little sweat goes a long way, paying dividends in efficient problem solving, safer driving, and fewer trips back to the grocery store for forgotten items.

    4. Jump start your immune system: We love to hug and kiss our children. In the course of a good snuggle, however, the opportunity for germ transfer is prime. Regular exercise boosts your immune system, giving you an edge in fending off the latest sickness to threaten your home. Hopefully you didnʼt skip #3 though, because sleep is the immune systemʼs wingman. Skimp on your sleep, and your constitution will pay the price.

    5. Relieve stress: thereʼs a reason they call it “runnerʼs high,” and not “diaper changing high.” Exercise releases endorphins reducing anxiety, promoting psychological well being, and generally keeping the crazy at bay. Mom tends to be the glue that holds a family together, and if she falls apart, the household is sure to follow suit. Itʼs been said, “if mama ainʼt happy, ainʼt nobody happy,” so next time youʼre thinking of skipping the gym, remember that people are counting on you.

    6. Fend off memory loss: letʼs not just survive those early years, letʼs remember them! Getting your body moving on a regular basis not only improves learning and memory, it may fend off Alzheimer's. Plan on being present, both physically and mentally, for all the major family milestones.

    7. Better looking skin: for mom this means less time trying to cover up unsightly blemishes, which translates to what every kid wants, more play time. And for the mommies with girls, this means learning right from the start that happiness is derived from within, and not the makeup counter at Macyʼs.

    8. Improve your core strength: Have you ever tried to hold several bags of groceries in one arm, grab your munchkin from the car seat with the other, and slam the car door shut with your hip, all simultaneously? Not an easy task, but itʼs complicated acrobatic feats like this that the average mother faces every day! Exercise that includes balance and reactive training can improve multitasking abilities for the busy mom, meaning more efficiency in household chores, and more time leftover for fun.

    9. Stronger bones: women are especially prone to Osteoporosis. Studies have shown that strength training promotes increased bone density, and reduces the risk of Osteoporosis. Lift weights, run, or even catch a yoga class to greatly reduce the risk that a broken hip could leave your children as a caretaker, long before they are ready.

    10. Longevity: The longer you live, the more quality time youʼll enjoy spending with the ones you love. Life is unpredictable, and although we canʼt control every variable, there are some potential hazards we can avoid. Shut down the most common life-threatening diseases, simply by hitting the gym regularly. Diabetes, heart disease and stroke can be prevented, and in some cases reversed, with the help of a consistent exercise regimen.

Despite all the easy excuses, itʼs worth looking over that busy schedule one more time. Rearrange or reschedule, but do whatever it takes to carve out few minutes each day, and demand the time to exercise your heart, flush out your lungs, and maybe even become the mom you always hoped youʼd be.
  • Girls on the Run 5k coming to Natomas Community

    by Cal Fit | May 06, 2013
Girls on the Run of Greater Sacramento will be holding their 3rd annual 5k race in Natomas on May 18, 2013 at 9:00am at North Natomas Regional Park. The spring run will benefit Girls on the Run of Greater Sacramento, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which currently serves over 600 girls throughout Sacramento, Natomas, El Dorado Hills, Elk Grove, Folsom, Rocklin, Roseville and Yolo County. The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

The race is being emceed by KCRA’s Edie Lambert and her husband Lloyd Lavine. The race start and finish will take place on Via Ingoglia in front of Inderkum High School.  The 5k is designed to be a fun and supportive community event for families. A prerace group warm-up will be led by Fitness Rangers of East Sacramento, and prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers.

Girls on the Run is a curriculum based youth sports program for girls in grades 3 – 8. The program stresses the importance of equally developing the emotional, mental, social and physical aspects of each girl. The curriculum encourages independent thinking, healthy group dynamics and problem solving and emphasizes the importance of making healthy choices. The girls, led by trained coaches and volunteers, meet two times per week for 12 weeks every spring and fall. The goal of the program is to foster a respect for healthy living while celebrating each girl.  Every practice focuses on fitness, character development, positive reinforcement of each individual child, and having fun, while training each girl to run a 5K. Each of GOTR’s 12-week seasons culminate in a 5K run where parents, coaches, teachers, families and friends gather to celebrate and support the girls who, for many, are running their first 5K.

  • Are You Drinking Enough Water?

    by Cal Fit | May 03, 2013
Of all the life sustaining substances on the planet, water is the one you don’t want to mess around with. While the human body can pull from tissue and fat stores to sustain life in the absence of food, a person will literally die without water in as little as three days.

Water is absolutely essential to healthy body function. Every system in your body depends on it, from your blood to your bones. It helps flush waste from your lymph system, gives cushion to joints and soft tissues, and greases the wheels in digestion.

If you’ve never paid much attention to your water intake, it might be time to start. Dehydration can occur quickly, and effect you in ways you wouldn’t expect. Fatigue, poor cognition, and irritability are just some symptoms that could sneak up on you in the absence of enough H2O.

But how much is enough? Science has suggested that 8 glasses of water a day is the magic number, but the truth is, it’s not as cut and dry as that. The simple answer is that there is no “perfect” amount that can be prescribed to encompass the entire population. How much water an individual needs is dependent on several factors, and cannot be generalized across the board.

Consider these factors when determining your fluid needs:

Health: Have you been sick? Stomach bugs and fevers can exacerbate hydration issues. If you’re sick, or have been recently sick, pay extra attention to your water intake, and try to eat veggies and fruits, such as tomatoes and melon, that have a high water content.

Climate: Where do you live? People who live in Eureka, California won’t have nearly as much trouble staying hydrated as people who live in, say, Death Valley, where the temperature regularly climbs well above 100 degrees fahrenheit. Heat and wind speed surface evaporation, and as your body sweats to keep cool, you’ll lose valuable fluids.

Activity Level: It’s no secret that exercise makes you sweat, which can lead to dehydration. A good rule of thumb to follow is to rehydrate with 1/2 a cup of water for every 15 minutes of moderate exercise you perform, increasing to 1 cup for extra strenuous exercise.

Protein Intake: This is a sneaky one. Protein requires more water to process than other macronutrients. Make sure that if you’re ingesting more protein than the recommended 0.8 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, you are offsetting that with additional water.

A safe place to start would be with your eight glasses a day, and watch how you feel from there. Be aware of your mood, energy levels, and thirst, and adjust water intake to account for your health, climate, activity level, and protein intake. Remember, your entire system depends on your hydration, and you’re the only one who can take the reigns.

  • How to Carve an Extra 30 Minutes Out of Your Day (to spend at the gym)

    by Cal Fit | Apr 30, 2013
One of the easiest excuses for not getting to the gym is the old, “I’m too busy” excuse. And it’s a legitimate excuse, if you’re into excuses. In today’s busy world where people are multitasking like never before, and cramming as much as they can into a work day, we have to actively make time to work out. It doesn’t just happen.

Here is a simple guide to carving an extra 30 minutes out of your day to spend at the gym.

Wake up earlier: This is the hardest thing for people to imagine doing, but after a few weeks, you may actually enjoy getting your workout done first thing in the morning. Most people who work out first thing in the morning eat better throughout the day, and tend to have more success losing weight, and reaching their fitness goals. It seems that making fitness a priority, and checking it off your list first thing in the morning, sets the tone for the entire day.

Eat at your desk: If you’re chained to your desk during the work day, try eating a few smaller meals throughout the morning, and using your lunch break to get sweaty. Keep a gym bag stocked with wet wipes and deodorant so you can simply towel off, freshen up, and get back to work. An hour long lunch break is plenty of time to go get a solid 1/2 hour workout in. Try training with high intensity intervals to get the most bang for your buck.

Skip lunch and get off early: If your work environment is flexible, you may be able to work through lunch and get off an hour early. Some offices will allow employees to manage their schedule in this way, and it’s a great way to get your time in at the gym before you have to go home in the afternoon. It’s easy to make good decisions at the dinner table after working out when you certainly don’t want to counteract all that hard work you just put in.

Turn off the TV: The average american family is still spending too much time in front of the TV. Make fitness a priority in your family, and after a light dinner, haul the whole family off to the gym. Or head outside for a hike, or walk. Grab Fido and run him around the neighborhood. As a bonus, children who grow up in families that value exercise naturally mature into fitness-minded adults, so you’re not just taking care of yourself here.

It’s not enough to simply hope that your day will have enough excess time to spend nurturing your health. Your fitness levels are a direct result of the effort you put into showing up. Consciously making the time to care for yourself, and focusing on your fitness, can be the hardest part of any exercise routine. Remember that you are worth it though, and your time is yours to manage. Make the most of it!

  • 9 Reasons to Follow California Family Fitness on Pinterest

    by Cal Fit | Apr 17, 2013
If you’re anything like the millions of other Pinterest users in America, you’ve got a serious pinning problem. Not that we blame you! Where else can you find and collect so many funny, inspiring, educational, and useful bits of information, all in one place?

What’s so great about Pinterest, aside from the fact that you can save great scraps of information for later, putting less demand on your time, is the implicit legitimacy of a pin. You know right from the get-go that someone already thinks that pin is valuable or useful, and so in a way, it’s been prescreened for junk.

Did you know California Family Fitness has joined the Pinterest craze? We know a good thing when we see it, and it’s easy to appreciate how easy Pinterest has made it to share and collect great ideas from all over the web.

We have several boards that we’ve filled up with great information in a variety of health related categories, and it’s all in one convenient place, just waiting to be repinned.

In case you need any more reason to follow us on Pinterest, check out the top 9 reasons you should be stalking Cal Fit’s Pinterest boards.

    1. Get Motivated. Let’s be honest, not every day starts with a smile and a burning desire to get down to the business of calorie burning. Being fit takes dedication and drive, which can wane from time to time. Combat mental fatigue and lagging ambition by browsing through our “motivation” board, and repinning a few inspirational quotes or pictures. Simply looking at positive messages can reset your mental switch, and get you moving with renewed purpose.
    2. Keep your workout fresh. It’s hard to keep your routine fresh. We are, after all, creatures of habit. But you can easily find fantastic ideas for workouts to try, the latest in exercise science information, and even great outdoor exercise ideas for the whole family, all on Cal Fit’s Pinterest boards.
    3. Kids Fitness Ideas. Getting the kids involved in a fit lifestyle is a gift that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Our “Kids Fitness Ideas” board is loaded with fun family-style activities to get those little hearts pumping, and those little faces smiling.
    4. Find Great Healthy Recipe Ideas. If keeping your workout routine interesting is hard, then keeping your meal plans exciting and new is nearly impossible. Luckily though, it isn’t actually impossible. All you need is a little inspiration to liven up your recipe repertoire, and you can easily find a ton of quick, healthy, family friendly recipe ideas on our “Healthy Recipes” board.
    5. Get the Inside Scoop. Don’t miss a single thing happening here at Cal Fit. When we roll out new classes, special events, or promotions, you’ll be among the first to know, and you’ll be able to repin it so you can find the details later.
    6. Keep the Kids Busy. Our “Kids Klub” board is where you can find out about all the fun things going on in our childcare programs. You will definitely work out harder, and with more focus if you are certain your kids are off having some fun of their own.
    7. Great Wellness Tips. True and complete wellness only happens when we address both the body and mind. Find wonderful tips for general wellness on our “Wellness Tips” board. Stress reduction, brain stimulation, and immune system function are just some of the useful topics you can repin for safekeeping.
    8. Stay Connected With Other Members. Other members follow us, and are encouraged to leave comments and “like” the pins that worked well for them. You can be a part of the growing community of Cal Fit Pinterest members who are already actively repinning and sharing their thoughts.
    9. You Are What You Read. Just as filling your body with junk will have negative consequences, filling your mind with it does too. Why not spend time online in a place that is filled with nurturing, positive information that can inspire, motivate, and help you reach your goals.
Pinterest is addictive, there’s no doubt about it. So make sure what you’re spending time pinning is going to help you toward reaching your goals. Take a moment to follow Cal Fit on Pinterest and take advantage of the plethora of great pins we’ve already collected for you. What are you waiting for? Pin away!
